Alan Berkman, MD, died on June 5th, 2009, after battling cancer, both in prison and after his release, for twenty-four years. He had been a progressive activist since the early 1960s, when he became active in the movement for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. After medical school he practiced community medicine in New York City and Lowndes County, Alabama. In 1971 he provided medical care to survivors of the Attica Prison Uprising; he also provided medical expertise for the legal cases arising from the uprising. He also delivered medical care to the Native American resistance at Wounded Knee (1974). Incarcerated for eight years (1985-1992) for armed robbery and explosives possession. After his release, Berkman advocated around homelessness and AIDS, becoming an international AIDS expert.
